Can you store geocoding results?
Updated Nov 5, 2026
Short answer: it depends on the provider, the plan and sometimes the kind of request. Some forbid it, some allow 30 days, some charge several times more for results you keep, and some allow it outright.
It matters because most apps that geocode an address want to save the coordinates: to sort listings by distance, draw them on a map later or avoid paying for the same lookup twice.
The terms, provider by provider
| Provider | May you store results? | Price to know |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps Platform | Latitude and longitude may be cached for up to 30 consecutive days, with a narrower per-user exception. Results must not be used with a non-Google map. | $5.00 per 1,000 after 10,000 free a month |
| Mapbox | Only "Permanent" results; "Temporary" results may not be cached. Permanent needs a card on file or an enterprise contract, and the Product Terms limit how results may be used. | Permanent: $5.00 per 1,000, no free allowance |
| Stadia Maps | Permanent storage on Standard ($80/month) and up; Starter allows temporary storage. | Geocoding costs 20 credits per request |
| MapTiler | The terms allow using search results outside the service. The free plan is non-commercial. | Paid plans from $30/month |
| Geoapify | Storing results is allowed, with attribution. | Free 3,000 credits a day; paid from $59/month |
| LocationIQ | The terms say response data may be stored forever. | Free 5,000 requests a day with a link back; paid from $100/month for request-based plans |
| PinSharing | Indefinitely on any paid plan, including after you cancel; 30 days on Free. | $19/month for 100,000 |

What "storing" usually covers
- Caching: keeping a result for a while so the same lookup isn't repeated.
- Storing: keeping it as part of your own data, for example a listing's coordinates.
- Using it elsewhere: showing it on another provider's map, exporting it, or sharing it with customers. Some terms allow storing but restrict this.
OpenStreetMap-based results
Results built on OpenStreetMap, like PinSharing's, come under the Open Database License. Keep the credit "© OpenStreetMap contributors" with them. The OpenStreetMap Foundation's Geocoding Guideline explains how the licence applies to geocoded data.
