# Free geocoder: address to latitude and longitude

Type an address or place name to get its latitude and longitude, a map and the API request.

Free tools draw images with the small Free-plan mark and are limited to about 20 runs an hour. For more, [get a free key](https://pinsharing.com/dashboard): no card, and new accounts get Growth's limits for 14 days.

## Geocoding from your own code

```bash
curl 'https://api.pinsharing.com/v1/geocode?q=233+S+Wacker+Dr,+Chicago&limit=1&key=YOUR_KEY'
```

The answer is GeoJSON: `features[0].geometry.coordinates` is `[longitude, latitude]`, and `properties` holds the street, city, postcode and country. Use `/v1/autocomplete` for type-ahead search boxes.

Many geocoding APIs don't let you keep results. On PinSharing's paid plans you may store them indefinitely: see [who lets you store geocoding results](https://pinsharing.com/learn/can-you-store-geocoding-results).

## Questions

**How accurate is this geocoder?**

It uses OpenStreetMap data. Streets, towns and places are reliable worldwide; US house numbers are good in many cities and thinner in others. If a house number isn't found you'll usually get the street.

**Can I geocode a list of addresses?**

Not in this page. With a free key you can call /v1/geocode from a script; Free includes 10,000 lookups a month and paid plans from 100,000.

**Can I save the coordinates?**

Copy them freely from this page. Results from the API may be stored for 30 days on Free and indefinitely on paid plans.
