Map images for emails, PDFs and receipts
Booking confirmations, delivery receipts, itineraries, inspection reports: anywhere a map helps but JavaScript can't run, a static image works. PinSharing lets you keep that image as long as the document lives.
One URL, one image
<img src="https://api.pinsharing.com/v1/static?markers=41.8781,-87.6298|41.6828,-88.3515&size=600x300&scale=2&key=YOUR_KEY"
width="600" height="300" alt="Map from pickup to drop-off">
Add up to 25 markers, a path of up to 200 points for a route, or an area for an approximate location. Choose PNG, JPG or WebP; JPG is smallest for email.
Fetch once, store, reuse
Email clients and PDF readers fetch images at odd times, sometimes years later. Fetch the image when you generate the email or document, store it in your own storage, and link to your copy. On paid plans that's allowed indefinitely, even after you cancel, and you're billed for one image, not every open.
Watch out for
- Keep the credit "© OpenStreetMap contributors" near the image, or in the footer of the email or document.
- Don't put your API key in emails people can forward. Fetch server-side and serve your stored copy instead.
- Free-plan images carry a small mark. Any paid plan removes it.
Questions
Why can't I just use an interactive map in an email?
Email clients don't run JavaScript, so interactive maps don't work. A static image does, everywhere.
Is it allowed to keep the image in a PDF I send out?
On PinSharing's paid plans, yes: you may store and reuse images indefinitely, including in documents you send, with the OpenStreetMap credit. Some providers restrict caching their map content or using static images in place of their API, so check their terms.
Will the images look sharp on phones and in print?
Use scale=2 for double-density pixels. Images go up to 1280×1280 (2560×2560 at scale 2).
