School data
US school attendance zone data
For any US address: the public school district and, grade by grade, the assigned public school and its attendance zone. Monthly GeoJSON releases. Every zone says how old it is.
By state or nationwide: ask for a quote. Keep what you download.
68,382 of 82,889 regular public schools have an attendance zone (82%)
41,056 of them from current maps published by 1,275 districts, cities and counties
13,368 school districts and 101,110 public schools
Coverage as of November 2026. Zones are added every month.
- Whole US, one state, or only what changed
- Stable ids from release to release
- No ratings or test scores
- Keep the data after the licence ends
District boundaries are free. Current attendance zones aren't.
If you only need districts and school locations, use the free federal data. Attendance zones are the hard part: the only national federal set is the School Attendance Boundary Survey (SABS), an experimental survey NCES ran for the 2013-14 and 2015-16 school years. It hasn't published a later round, and NCES notes that the 2015-16 file is for research and reflects a single snapshot in time.

See it for yourself. In the free Delaware sample (2026-11-06 release), 23 of 521 attendance zones come from the 2015-16 survey. The other 498 are for the 2024-25 to 2026-27 school years, or cover a whole district that has a single school for those grades.
Coverage (November 2026)
- Districts and schools: every US public school district (13,368) and public school (101,110), from NCES and the U.S. Census Bureau.
- Attendance zones: 68,382 of 82,889 regular public schools (82%) in 12,712 districts, in every state. 10,167 districts are covered for every school.
- Current maps: 41,056 schools (60% of those with a zone) in 1,275 districts. The other 27,326 use the 2015-16 survey, labelled with that year, until their district publishes a map we can use. Examples:
- Chicago Public Schools and 16 suburban districts (Chicago, IL): 480 zones, 2025-26 for Chicago; suburban maps as each district publishes them
- New York City public schools (elementary, middle and zoned high schools) (New York, NY): 811 zones, 2024-25
- Gaps: the lowest coverage is in Vermont (46%), Rhode Island (63%), Massachusetts (64%). Puerto Rico has districts and schools but no zones yet. Boston assigns students from choice lists rather than zones, so its schools have none by design. Charter and fully virtual schools are never shown as assigned.

What's in the file
GeoJSON, one feature per line, gzip-compressed, in WGS84. Get the whole country, any one state, or only what changed since the previous release. It loads into PostGIS, BigQuery, Snowflake or GDAL.
Districts
Boundary, NCES district id (leaid), name, kind (unified, elementary or secondary), grades and school year.
Schools
Location, NCES school id (ncessch), name, address, grades, level and whether it's a charter school.
Attendance zones
Boundary (or the whole district), school, grades, how it was made, a confidence score from 0 to 1, school year and last-checked date. Zone ids stay the same between releases.
Staying current: load a full file once, then apply each month's changes file, matching on leaid, ncessch and zone_id. Full field list: the data file.
Free sample: every district, school and zone in Delaware
About 3 MB, no sign-up. Use it to check the format, the fields and how old the zones are before you buy.
Download the Delaware sample (.geojsonl.gz)
Prefer a spreadsheet? Turn it into CSV with GDAL (boundaries come out as text):
curl -o DE.geojsonl.gz https://api.pinsharing.com/v1/schools/sample
ogr2ogr -f CSV DE.csv /vsigzip/DE.geojsonl.gz -lco GEOMETRY=AS_WKT
The sample is for evaluation. Using it in a product needs a licence.
The data licence
Included
- The whole US dataset: districts, schools and every published zone
- Monthly releases for a year, each with a changes file
- Downloads of the whole country, any state, or the changes
- Use in your own products and APIs, for example showing zones and likely school assignments on listing pages
- Keep using what you downloaded after the licence ends
About $417 a month, billed yearly.
Good to know
- Paying: card or US bank account through Stripe. For an invoice (net 30), email sales@pinsharing.com with your company name and billing contact.
- Downloading: after payment, sign in to your dashboard with the same email. Downloads need two-step sign-in.
- Not included: reselling or redistributing the dataset, which needs a separate agreement. Ask sales.
- No refunds on licence fees, so check the sample and the state table first.
Buying means you agree to the School Data Licence terms.
Need an API instead of a file?
GET /v1/schools?lat=…&lon=… returns the districts at a point and, grade by grade, the assigned school with its zone, including the source map's address. It comes with platform and enterprise contracts. IDX and real-estate website platforms can start with a free 60-day pilot.
Fair housing
PinSharing returns boundaries and school facts only: no ratings, test scores or demographic data. Attendance boundaries are set by school districts and change, so show the notice that an assignment should be confirmed with the district.
Questions
Where can I get US school attendance zone boundaries?
District and city open-data portals publish them one district at a time, and the federal School Attendance Boundary Survey has a national set for 2015-16. PinSharing collects both into one file: as of November 2026, attendance zones for 68,382 of 82,889 regular US public schools (82%), 41,056 of them from current district maps. It's sold as a data licence, by state or for the whole country, or by API in platform contracts.
Is the NCES School Attendance Boundary Survey (SABS) still updated?
NCES describes SABS as an experimental survey that collected attendance boundaries for the 2013-14 and 2015-16 school years. It hasn't published a later round. The 2015-16 file is public domain and intended for research, and boundaries change from year to year.
What's the difference between school district boundaries and attendance zones?
A school district boundary tells you which district serves an address. An attendance zone tells you which school in that district serves it, usually grade by grade. District boundaries are free from NCES and the Census Bureau; current attendance zones aren't published nationally.
Is there free school boundary data?
Yes, for districts and schools: NCES's Common Core of Data and EDGE programs and the Urban Institute's Education Data Portal are free. For attendance zones, the free national data is the 2015-16 SABS file. PinSharing's free Delaware sample lets you compare before you buy.
How current is each zone?
Every zone states the school year it applies to, the date we last checked it, how it was made and a confidence score; the API also returns the source map's address. 41,056 schools have zones from current district, city or county maps. The other 27,326 zoned schools use the 2015-16 survey, labelled with that year, until their district publishes a map we can use. We release monthly.
Can I use it on a real estate, IDX or listing site?
Yes. The licence lets you show district and zone boundaries and likely school assignments in your own products, including through your own API, as long as people can't download the data in bulk. Tell users to confirm enrolment with the district. Reselling the dataset itself needs a separate agreement.
How much does school attendance zone data cost?
The PinSharing School Data Licence is priced by state or for the whole US dataset; ask sales@pinsharing.com for a quote, paid by invoice (net 30) or card. API access is part of platform and enterprise contracts, and IDX platforms can start with a free 60-day pilot.
What happens when the licence ends?
Updates and downloads stop, and you may keep using the data you already downloaded, under the licence terms, for as long as you like.
Do you include school ratings, test scores or demographics?
No. The data is boundaries and school facts only. Each school has its NCES id, so you can join enrolment and other public CCD data yourself.
